As the seasons change and the days grow shorter, I’ve noticed how much my mood shifts along with them. For many of us, seasonal depression and anxiety can quietly creep in, making even simple things feel a little heavier. This year, I’ve made a promise to myself: to show up for me. To use the tools therapy has given me, lean into my faith, and rediscover joy in the little things like writing this blog, journaling, listening to music, and cozy gaming in a warm, peaceful space.
Understanding My Seasonal Depression and Anxiety
Seasonal depression can sometimes feel like a fog that settles in uninvited and is hard to shake. Paired with anxiety, it can leave me feeling drained, distracted, and emotionally overwhelmed. But therapy has helped me put words to what I’m feeling instead of pushing it down. It’s taught me that I’m not broken, I’m simply human.
Breathing techniques have become one of my strongest allies. When my mind starts to race, I take a few slow, deep breaths to ground myself. One technique that’s helped me the most is called box breathing something I learned through therapy. It’s simple, but powerful:
- Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of four.
- Hold your breath for four counts.
- Exhale gently through your mouth for four counts.
- Pause for four counts before the next breath.
Repeating this for even a minute helps calm my body and slow my thoughts. It’s amazing how something so small can remind me that I’m safe, present, and capable of handling what’s in front of me.
Creating Joy and Calm in Everyday Moments
Instead of trying to push through the discomfort, I’ve learned to pause and do things that bring me joy. Writing this blog, for example, helps me process my thoughts and feelings in a healthy way. Journaling allows me to release what I’m holding inside, while prayer reconnects me with peace and gratitude.
Music has always been a gentle companion on difficult days, a reminder that emotions can flow through sound and bring healing. And cozy gaming has become one of my favorite self-care tools; it gives me a safe space to unwind, smile, and recharge without pressure.
Making My Home My Sanctuary
One of the most powerful lessons therapy has taught me is that peace starts where you are. I’ve been intentional about making my home a comfortable space, soft lighting, cozy blankets, calming scents, and moments of stillness. It’s not about isolating myself from the world, but rather shutting out the noise for a little while so I can breathe and just be.
These small choices help me find balance between rest and connection, allowing me to return to the world more centered, grounded, and at peace.
Finding Light in the Dark
If you struggle with seasonal depression or anxiety, know that you’re not alone. Take a deep breath. Let yourself rest without guilt. Do the things that bring you joy, no matter how small they may seem. Healing doesn’t always look like progress; sometimes it’s simply allowing yourself to pause and feel okay.
This season, I’m choosing peace over perfection. Grace over guilt. And I hope you do, too.
