Welcome back to our SMART Goals series! Last week, we began this series by taking A Deeper Dive Into SMART Goals for the New Year, One Letter at a Time. We focused on the letter “S” for “Specific” because getting clear on what makes everything that comes after so much easier.

This week, we’re focusing on the M in SMART: Measurable Goals. I’m sharing some personal reflections and tips on how to turn vague intentions into trackable triumphs that actually fit into a busy, intentional life.

That quote has always stuck with me. When you measure something, it becomes real, and real things have the space to grow.

Why Measurement Matters

Have you ever set a goal like “I want to be healthier” or “I want to be more present,” only to find yourself a few weeks later wondering if you’ve actually made any progress?

Goals like that are beautiful in intention, but they are tricky in action. Without a yardstick, we often default to feeling like we haven’t done enough, even when we’ve been working hard. Measurable goals tell you exactly what success looks like, and that clarity is what fuels your motivation every single step of the way.

My Personal Approach: How I Make My Goals Count

In my own life, I’ve found that measurement doesn’t have to feel like a performance review. It’s actually an act of self-care because it protects my time and energy. Here is how I stay on track:

1. The Grace Range (Minimum vs. Optimal)

Life is rarely a straight line. I’ve learned to measure my progress using a sliding scale so I never feel like I’ve failed:

  • Optimal: Spend 60 minutes on my creative project.
  • Minimum: Spend 10 minutes journaling.

By measuring both, I stay consistent. Both are wins on my tracker!

2. Use Tools That Keep It Simple

Measurement only works if you have a place to see your progress. When I was looking for a way to track my own habits without the clutter of a complicated system, I created the Very Simple Undated Monthly Planner.

It’s a clean, intentional space to map out your month and see your wins at a glance. Because it’s undated, you can start exactly where you are today without feeling like you’ve missed the beginning of the year.

3. The Two-Day Rule

I’ve moved away from the pressure of perfect streaks. My personal rule for staying consistent is simple: Never miss two days in a row. If I miss my target on Monday, my only goal for Tuesday is to get back on the board. This keeps me moving forward without the weight of perfectionism holding me back.

Take the Next Step

If you’re ready to move from wishing to doing, I’d love to walk beside you. I’m hosting a 5-Day SMART Goals Challenge to help you refine your vision and get those plans in place. It’s simple, supportive, and a great way to build momentum.

As always, thank you for being on this journey with me. Next week, we’ll continue with the letter A for Achievable, and I can’t wait to dive in!

As you go about your day, take care, be well, trust your journey, and remember to live everyday life very simple. See you next Monday.
